As we begin our new year in Primary 1, we intro- duce the children to the many wonders of the universe through the telling of our 5 Great Sto- ries. Throughout these explorations, the child- ren will be invited to ponder how early human beings started to "communicate" through pain- tings in caves, then via the symbols used by the Sumerians, the hieroglyphs by the Egyptians... until the invention of the modern alphabet that we know today. Gradually, they will come to appreciate the unparalleled significance that writing and the development of the modern alphabet has had on the progress of the many great human civilizations, throughout history.
During our trip to the L Museum, we will ex- plore the theme of writing and communication in more depth, as we are guided through the history of writing. From cuneiform to Chinese calligraphy, Egyptian hieroglyphs to the calli- grams of Christian Dotremont. Together, we will discover how these systems worked as well as their uses and evolution over the years. The children will then have the opportunity to put their new knowledge into practice during an on-site workshop.
