This school caters to children aged 2 1/2 to 11 years old. Children transferring from the 'Savoorke' preschool can join the Primary section in Rotselaerlaan. The school is conveniently located between Brussels and Leuven, serving families from both cities. The school consists of two beautiful villas, which together house the Children’s House and the Primary section. Children spend their school days in large learning spaces that include music areas, library, and a Primary lab facility.

Children can attend a full day programme, which includes The After School Hour programme available up to 18.00 hrs. The ASH guide provides activities for the children and they spend a lot of time outdoors! Play is such an important element in stimulating integration of what children have learned in other situations. Children require outdoor time to be set aside in order to ‘digest’ their experiences.

Green Spaces

The two villas are linked by gardens and play areas. The grounds include large sandpits, swings, a basketball area, vegetable gardens and garden sheds with the necessary equipment for a multitude of outdoor projects (The Workshop, The Flora and Fauna Shed, The Bike Shed, and the Garden Shed). The children work in the vegie garden, and sow seeds in the hothouse. The animals – the chickens, Ella and Sheila, and rabbit, Florence, are looked after very well.

The Workshop is used by the older students and The Bike Shed houses our child-sized school-bikes and 2 adult-sized bikes. Together, they can explore the beautiful surroundings in Tervuren. Having these resources available, the children are stimulated to develop and further their gross motor skills in several areas, including constructing, sports, games, circus and gardening.

For sports, walks and nature excursions, the Primary children visit the Waranda Park on a regular basis. Only a 5-minute walk from school, is one of the original entrance Archway into this beautiful green belt that surrounds Brussels. Parking for parents is available in the car park of the neighbouring Carrefour Supermarket.

History

The ‘Rotselaerlaan’ School is close to the Tervuren Park. The children go to the park on a weekly basis for sports, nature walks, and Botany lessons. The surroundings are rich in history. There is the beautiful Museum of Central Africa, the Kolonien palace, St. Hubert Chapel and the Spanish House. At the village of Tervuren end, one can even see the ruins of a medieval castle.

The children can walk from school along the Avenue de Tervuren for 500 meters to arrive at the Museum of Central Africa. This expansive museum was completely renovated and reopened its doors in 2019. The building dates back to 1897 and originally held King Leopold II’s collection. The building in itself is a beautiful piece of architecture and children are very lucky to have it in their ‘back yard’ as we call it.

From a natural point of view there are different biotopes in Tervuren. There is the river ‘Voer’, woodland, ponds, and a botanical garden. The centre of the park consists of a meeting point made of several ‘Dolmen’ which legend says have been part of a prehistoric tomb. The Montessori Secondary Section has also used the park and the Dolmens as a theatre location with a medieval atmosphere.

The children cover a lot of ground on foot, and use the school bicycles for larger distances to visit monuments, businesses, the local market and the ecological farm of ‘La Finca’.

Welcome to our website
The International Montessori School offers a thoroughly prepared and beautiful learning environment, supporting the complete development of children and students from the ages of 1 to 18. A bilingual approach together with the Montessori Pedagogy and the International Baccalaureate Secondary Section (IB MYP and DP) prepares children and young adults for life.

We focus on all aspects of the personality and help children to gain trust in themselves in order to feel confident and empowered, both within their social group, and the world at large. This, together with balance in freedoms and logical boundaries and the guideline that “your freedom ends where someone else’s freedom begins” helps children to become responsible individuals who look after themselves, their environment, and others!

We hope you enjoy our website and find useful information on the details involved in assisting towards the development of a harmonious personality.
