‘The Senne River and the Wastewater Treatment Plant’
Time: 9.00 - 14.00
Transport: Public Transport
Location: Ave. de Vilvoorde 450,
1130 Bruxelles
The Brussels-Capital Region is part of the Senne hydrographic basin, which is part of the Escaut basin. Back in the 16th century, the river became an open drain, and its overflows caused some fa- tal epidemics. A wastewater management plan was put together in the 1980s to help the Senne regain its original role. The idea was to treat was- tewater from the river's basins.
The students will visit the wastewater treatment plant to have a better understanding of the use of the Seene River and how a sewage tre- atment plant works to protect the environment and people's health. In the excursion, they will understand the concepts seen about rivers, the use of rivers depending on historical needs and how these needs are adapted to protect the environment.
